It Gets Better: Blog Edition

I had the intention of writing this post a while ago, but go side tracked. Unfortunately I am prompted by tragic events in my hometown to take up writing this today.

Last week a 16 year old boy, who goes to the same school as my son, committed suicide. This individual was an advocate and activist in the local LGBT community and seen as something of a leader in the school’s GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance) group. He wasn’t bullied and came from a loving family. He struggled with depression. And depression is what ultimately caused this young man to take his life.

It saddens me. Had the signs been noticed. Had there been more support. Maybe this wouldn’t have happened. I am thankful where there is support out there in this world for youth. And that brings me back to this post.

The It Gets Better Project.

From their website:

About the It Gets Better Project

The It Gets Better Project’s mission is to communicate to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth around the world that it gets better, and to create and inspire the changes needed to make it better for them.

What is the It Gets Better Project?

In September 2010, syndicated columnist and author Dan Savage created a YouTube video with his partner Terry Miller to inspire hope for young people facing harassment. In response to a number of students taking their own lives after being bullied in school, they wanted to create a personal way for supporters everywhere to tell LGBT youth that, yes, it does indeed get better.

The It Gets Better Project™ has become a worldwide movement, inspiring more than 50,000 user-created videos viewed more than 50 million times. To date, the project has received submissions from celebrities, organizations, activists, politicians and media personalities, including President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Adam Lambert, Anne Hathaway, Colin Farrell, Matthew Morrison of “Glee”, Joe Jonas, Joel Madden, Ke$ha, Sarah Silverman, Tim Gunn, Ellen DeGeneres, Suze Orman, the staffs of The Gap, Google, Facebook, Pixar, the Broadway community, and many more. For us, every video changes a life. It doesn’t matter who makes it.

That explains what the project is.

I have mentioned this in passing, but would like to remind con goers that American voice actor Greg Ayres also does a “It Gets Better: Con Edition” panel. He has done it at Anime Midwest for the last couple of years and as a parent of an out, gay son: I appreciate this, immensely.

11707594_10154026438094488_2854097742782399034_ndownload (26)

I appreciate it as a parent, as a former mental health worker who worked with teens, and as a fan. Greg opens up the floor to let con attendees talk about their experiences being bullied or cast out. It provides a place for people to feel accepted and supported which is something I feel teens (and even adults) need more of. If you are at a con (or run a con): please support this kind of programming. It is good for the community of fans altogether.

Now to my say:

It does get better. There are people out there who love you and will support you. It won’t always be as dark as it seems right now. I am the dorky, nerdy, parent. I was a dorky, nerdy kid. I wasn’t popular. I was self conscious and felt bad about myself. I hated how I looked. I was intimidated by people who called my names and threatened to beat me up. It got better. I graduated, left school, had friends who cared and accepted me. It got better. I never faced the harassment that LGBT youth do, but I was harassed and I know that it gets better. I never had clinical depression, but know several people who do: and, when treated, it gets better.

Reach out to one another.

Be kind.

Support positive programming.

Keep positive people in your life.

Soul Eater: A Therapist’s Animated Dreams

670px_soul_eater_wallpaper_background_windows_anim_by_iloveslushiez-d83feuq

Most who read this don’t know that my past life was that of a therapist. I earned my Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy around year 2000. I worked primarily with couples and teens and their families. I quit after a couple of years due to a combination of things, but mostly due to being able to earn a living to support my young family. Psychology (and philosophy) still are of an interest to me and are a strong part of who I am and that is in part what made Soul Eater so interesting to me.

What I mostly intend to explore in here is relationships. Most relationships, healthy or otherwise, are interdependent and complimentary. So, usually, in relationships you need someone to compliment your personality (ie: you need an yin to your yang). This was illustrated in the episode how it doesn’t work if you don’t match up when  Soul and Black Star tried to pair up and failed spectacularly. We need someone to balance our strengths and weaknesses and they need the same.

This post is mostly a series of observations I had about the show given the filter I have from my therapy background.

Artwork_-_(1)

Soul and Maka

To me, Soul and Maka seem to be the most balanced pair. Soul’s bravado and teen ego seems to balance Maka’s self doubt and confidence issues that she faces. Maka has a strong desire to achieve and be as good as her absentee mother (a Death Scythe). Maka in turn helps ground Soul’s more reckless nature with her desire to do the right thing and to achieve in an ethical manner.

tumblr_n4ynggSQhD1ta9suso1_500

Spirit and Maka

Father and daughter relationships can be rocky, especially if dad is a philanderer. Here we have a portrait of a divorcing family. Maka is in the middle of her parent’s divorce, and she has sided with her mom. Spirit (Maka’s dad) is a serial cheater. He can’t keep it in his pants and had repeatedly cheated on Maka’s mother while they were married. Thus, Maka has sided with her mother in the divorce and harbors a lot of anger at her dad for breaking up the family. While I do understand Maka’s position I couldn’t help but notice Maka’s mothers absence. Spirit, while he acted like a jerk (and is still quite immature as an adult) is the person who is there for Maka. Maka’s mom is elsewhere in the world, Spirit is in Maka’s life.

blackstar_and_tsubaki_by_tsubakina-d66gf30

Black Star and Tsubaki

The narcissist and the passive personality. It is in episode 5 that Stein makes explicit that the pairing of Black Star’s and Tsubaki’s personalities as complimenting one another. Although he is kinder in his assessment describing Black Star as self centered and a little bit wild while referring to Tsubaki as willing to compromise with an accepting nature. I call it an ego-manic and someone willing to put up with that. It is not as bad as I describe, however. A narcissist personality disorder is a person who is preoccupied with their own personal adequacy, power and prestige which Black Star does have issues with, but he does have a capacity to see other’s needs which a true narcissist doesn’t. Black Star does have many moments where he puts himself second to let someone else shine and Tsubaki has a great amount of her own personal strength as well. But from an exaggerated point of view: they need each other due to the extremes of their active vs passive natures.

Death The Kid and The Thompson Sisters

Oh Death The Kid….you little walking obsessive compulsive disorder you. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by unreasonable thoughts and fears (obsessions) that lead you to do repetitive behaviors (compulsions). It’s also possible to have only obsessions or only compulsions and still have OCD (mayoclinic.org). This would include Kid’s obsessive need for symmetry. Now Kid can rise above it, but he does have  neurotic tendencies for sure.  And that’s where The Thompson sisters come in. Stein points out (in episode 6) that the Thompson sisters, from having a different background and thus different attitude (more laid back), balance some of Kid’s more neurotic behaviors. I also see another, perhaps unintended, thing. Liz and Patty also have two very distinct personalities. Liz is a little more mature and sensible (but cautious bordering on fearful in some situations) whereas Patty is often fearless, childlike, and a bit out of her mind in her own way at times (though when push comes to shove she is very competent). What struck me was that Liz often got stuck into the parent (or caretaker) role having to wrangle the two crazier personalities (Patty and Kid). This isn’t absolute, but watch the show now and see if you see it…

crona__little_one__medusa_by_askthelittleone-d4p0nrw

Crona and Medusa

The abuser and the  abused. Crona is the child of the witch Medusa. Crona was abused: psychologically, physically, and emotionally. Medusa treated Crona, her child, as an experiment. Locked and isolated Crona in a room until Crona killed a baby dragon. Crona had to go into a dissociative  state in order to finally kill the dragon (on his mother’s orders), get let out of the room, and win his mother’s approval. Medusa also injected Crona with the Black Blood (using him as a disposable test subject) and thus carried the demon sword, Ragnarok, in him. Ragnarok is another personified side of Crona’s abuse. Crona gets emotionally and physically abused by Ragnarok. But one could also see Ragnarok as a side of Crona’s personality, split. Ragnarok representing Crona in a physically strong way, but also as a constant dialog of self loathing that is with Crona wherever he goes (I know this is reaching, but I am fine with that). As with most children, even the abused, Crona still wants and seeks the approval of his mother, and Medusa exploits this at a couple of points in the show.

This was just a small set of things that got me thinking. I usually don’t think to deeply into analyzing shows, but this was hard to resist. Soul Eater has got some richness in it’s pairing of characters and the levels of function and dysfunction that they share. I didn’t even get to Stein or to the Kishin. Maybe another day…

Thanks for reading.

Oh My God! It’s Too Cute!!!

Ore Monogatari

Ore Monogatari (My Love Story), which is currently airing, has been the biggest surprise show of the spring season for me. In short: It is too cute for words! Now I am not normally one who seeks out, or gets excited about, cute shows/ things  but this show has won me over. It is a sweet love story that has characters with more depth than I initially expected, and it’s funny.

I love this this show and so do my boys. Right before we went to Anime Midwest I had the boys and their cousin and my older son’s best friend over. They all sat down to watch Ore Monogatari. I was shocked as my older son’s friend loves this show! She is a “Left For Dead”, black wearing, zombie loving, teenage girl: but she loves how cute Ore Monogatari is. Consider me dumbfounded.

my-love-story-ep-5

The story follows Takeo Gouda, a first year student in high school. Takeo is a big guy. I mean, huge. He is an athlete who is admired by other males for being a cool, strong, athletic, nice guy. Takeo is not popular with girls. He is a bit awkward. He stares, invades people’s space, and is not the “bishonen” (pretty boy) type (which his best friend, Suna is).

Ore Monogatari 15

One day on the train with his friend, Makoto Sunakawa (Suna), they spot a girl being groped by a stranger. Takeo stops the sexual assault and apprehends the perpetrator. The girl, Rinko Yamato (who is a student at a nearby girl’s school), is grateful for Takeo’s help. Yamato later finds where Takeo lives to bring him a cake that she made as thanks.

ore_monogatari-01-takeo-reaction_face-cheesecake-shock-amazement

Takeo really likes the cake.

And from there “My Love Story” begins.

Of course the love story is about Takeo and Yamato. And that is what sets the show apart. My older son was pointing out that it was refreshing to see someone who is the comic relief (and normally would be a supporting character) be the main love interest.

The love story between Takeo and Yamato is deeply sweet. It is slow in it’s development, it is sweet and genuine. The two adore each other and are self conscious about it which makes the show all the more enjoyable.

tumblr_nnl4m3GAB91un6g2ko1_500

Takeo is very traditional, conservative, and slow to act. He cares about her deeply and finds her very cute. He wants to make sure he acts honorable towards Yamato and treats her with respect. He is head over heels for her.

Yamato finds Takeo to be the coolest person ever. She wants to hold his hand, she bakes for him, wants to spend time with him, and watches everything Takeo does through rose colored glasses.

200

This is how Yamato looks at Takeo.

Another aspect of the show that I enjoy is the friendship between Suna and Takeo. It is not glossed over. It is treated with respect. Suna is, unlike Takeo, popular with the girls. He is a pretty boy and girls swoon over him and want to date him. The thing is, Suna doesn’t want to date any of them. He has seen too many girls over time talking crap about Takeo behind his back and he doesn’t accept this: he is a loyal friend. Since they lived next to each other and their mothers were friends, Suna and Takeo grew up together. Their childhood friendship is shown at several points in the show.

Attention Parents: Watch this show. There is no cursing, fan service, or difficult themes. In fact there are a few things are that are worthwhile lessons: Loyalty in friendship, respectful treatment of others, love that is sweet, the value of hard work, and to be yourself.

I can’t recommend this show enough. It is too damn cute! It is cute. It is funny. Give it a watch.

A Couple of Sunshine Award Nominations!!

72GZz2U

I recently got two nominations for the Sunshine Award by Shay ( Anime Reviewer Girl) and Matthew  ( Matt-in-the-Hat). Thank you both very much, I really appreciate the kind thought of nominating my blog)

THE RULES:

If you have been nominated for The Sunshine Award and you choose to accept it, write a blog post about the Sunshine Award in which you:

1. Thank the person who nominated you.

2. Answer the questions from the person who nominated you.

3. Nominate a few other bloggers.

4. Write the same amount of questions for the bloggers you nominated.

5. Notify the bloggers on their blog.

6. Put the award button on your blog.

Matthew’s Questions

1. Which do you prefer better: Reading the manga first and then watching the anime, or do you watch the anime and then read the manga?

-I don’t really read much manga. However, I would probably want to watch the anime before reading the manga (I usually prefer to see a movie before I read the book).

2. Which anime series did you really dislike?

-None that I can think of…I didn’t care for how the second half of Guilty Crown ended up.

3. If you could spend one day with a voice actor, who would like to meet?

– That is hard to say…I have met a few American voice actors in passing at conventions and many of them seem to be really nice people. After speaking a little with Greg Ayres I can say he seems to be a really good person who cares about the fans and the anime fan community.

Shay’s Questions

1. Is there an anime you wish didn’t exist?

Not that I can think of since they are works of fiction…

2. What anime character do you think would be your rival?

None? Anyone too serious for their own good I would guess.

3. If you could have any superpower what would it be?

To sparkle in the most manly way possible like Major Alex Louis Armstrong.

4. What is your favorite movie?

That’s hard… Highlander, Better Off Dead, Big Trouble in Little China, and UHF are all up there. Anime movies: Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke.

5. Dub or Sub?

Depends on which I start watching first. I am not strictly in one camp or the other.

6. Read or write?

Read

7. Who is your current anime crush?

None really, but I creep out my boys for fun by saying Kongou (Kancolle) is my waifu.

8. What is your favorite Dessert?

I have really been enjoying matcha mochi ice cream lately.

My Questions

1. Why did you start to watch anime?

2. What keeps you watching?

3. What else do you do to keep yourself happy, healthy, sane?

Nominations

Many of you have been nominated lately and so I won’t be offended if you don’t answer.

My Late Birthday Present

My son, for a late present, did a vocal cover of one of my favorite songs: Kimi No Shiranai Monogatari. This is the ED from one of my favorite shows: Bakemonogatari.

Here it is (I think he did a pretty good job). TV size.

I have good kids.

Son Hacks Dad’s Blog Pt 1: Utaite/Youtaite – Basic Cover Stuff, I Guess

Heyo, I’m the hella homosexual 15-year old son of the owner of this blog! I kinda just got on my dad’s laptop and he doesn’t suspect a thing at the moment since he’s watching some live-action show (ew real people). (Just kidding, it’s the Mindy Project.)

Anyways, I’m gonna let you into a world that my dad doesn’t dabble in: The world of Nico Nico Douga and YouTube.

I should probably explain what an “Utaite” is before anything else.

An Utaite is a singer, one who covers Japanese songs (particularly Vocaloid ones from varying producers) and uploads them to the Japanese equivalent to YouTube, Nico Nico Douga.

If you’ve heard artists like MARiA from Garnidelia, the vocalist who sang “Ambiguous”, the second OP to Kill la Kill and the Mekakucity Actors OP “daze” or CHiCO , who occasionally sings with the producer Honeyworks for anime OPs (“Sekai wa Koi ni Ochiteiru” from the anime Ao Haru Ride or “Ai No Scenario” from Magic Kaito 1412), those vocalists started out as Utaite.

If you’re into Vocaloid (particularly covers), it’s likely that you’ve heard the names Lon, Soraru, Mafumafu, Halyosy, and/or 96Neko, they’re all Utaite.

Now for the Youtaite side.

As the name suggests, a Youtaite is basically the same as an Utaite, but rather than upload on NicoNico, they generally upload on YouTube (although some Youtaite/Utaite do both). Popular youtaite include Amanda Lee, JubyPhonic, Rachie, Chishio, Razzy, Saint, Sojiro, Mica Caldito, and countless others.

BUT, there are things to distinguish.

There are many different jobs that Youtaite and Utaite can have:
1.) Vocalist: This is pretty self-explanatory, the vocalist is the voice you hear in the cover.
2.) Mixer: A mixer is a magician– I mean, a mixer is someone who takes the raw vocals for a cover and edits them so they sound clearer, on-tune, and more connected to the instrumental. Mixing is one of the most important things when it comes to vocal covers.
3,) Instrumentalist: They make off-vocals, arrangements, and/or remixes for songs. The most popular example would be dj-Jo (but I like to call him the dubstep god).
4.) Artist: Many (Yo)utaite like to have original art for their covers.
5.) Animator: Similar to an artist, many people like to have original PVs, especially for choruses (which I’ll explain later).
6.) Translyricist: This is a more exclusive one. People who like to cover songs in English, Chinese, or any language that isn’t the original have to write or use other people’s translyrics (standing for “translated lyrics”). Translyricists have a lot of freedom in making the song theirs. They take the original translation, interpret the meaning of the song, and then convey them in a way that the words can flow naturally in whatever language they’re writing for.

I personally am both a vocalist and English translyricist. I enjoy interpreting songs, especially those from an anime that I’ve watched, as I can also connect the lyrics to the anime (I avoid making direct references to the show, and I’ve analyzed some songs more in-depth than my English papers).

The Youtaite community is extremely adverse, and pretty much everyone is really friendly and open! I’ve made several amazing friends, and collabed with them several times on different projects. There are many talented people that I’ve had the pleasure of talking to (and eventually collaborating with some of them).

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQYQ0FdcwxFfeN7Ne-F44VA/featured

This is my channel. I know I have a lot to learn, but everyone is always working on improving their work, and always helping others do the same! It’s a really caring community, and it’s very fulfilling to hear compliments along with constructive criticism!

Sorry that this is probably super boring without videos and pictures and whatnot, but I’ll still be back one day, just you wait…

Until then,
Glace (the son)

Off Again This Week…

Due to moving and general life business I have not had time to post.

This weekend I am off to Anime Central!! Myself, the boys, and a friend of theirs are going this weekend. Hopefully pics from that will be up by the end of the weekend.

In the meantime, enjoy the theme song to The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Watching Steins Gate With My Son: Episode 2

AKA: The “but he’s a guy.” episode.

We got to episode 2 sooner than I had expected. I am in the middle of moving and so I didn’t think this was going to be an option for a couple of weeks.

However, the move went fast and my couch and t.v. was already set up so my boys both decided that they wanted to spend the night. After watching episode 4 of the new Nisekoi season I popped on the blu ray of Steins Gate. First, I have to say: I watched Steins Gate the first time through Hulu on my Kindle Fire which was fine, but watching it on a big screen with a blu ray= Awesome!

This episode Okabe has found that Makise is not dead and goes to her lecture at the university. Her lecture establishes a couple of things well: She is smart, smarter than Okabe, she is a bit of a smart ass, and that Okabe doesn’t like having his delusions challenged.

steinsgate-2-0

Episode 2 also serves as a vehicle to introduce most all of the other characters. Yuugo Tennouji , owner of the CRT repair shop and Okabe’s landlord, was already introduced in episode 1. He, Yuugo, goes on to hire 18 year old, Suzuha Amane as a part time worker in the repair shop. Okabe runs into Moeka Kiryu on the street after she takes a photo of him with her phone. Okabe also goes to visit Mayuri at her part time job at the maid cafe and we are introduced to Faris Nyannyan (Rumiho Akiha) who is part owner and the most popular maid there (who is very good at indulging Okabe’s delusions). And lastly we are introduced to Ruka Urushibara, a friend of Mayuri’s that generates this wonderful scene:

This might be the only thing people would find objectionable in this episode, but even that is pushing it.

Overall the episode went over well and I didn’t cringe at any moments. The draw back to watching with both boys is the inevitable sibling rivalry and personality differences that crop up. My younger son has a habit of interjecting what he thinks is going to happen next. While I tell him to just watch, his brother is not as patient yelling:”Shut up! No one wants to hear your commentary!” ….Brothers.

Until next time: El Psy Congroo!
