It’s Gorgeous: Watch It!

5 Centimeters Per Second

I know I come late to the game in this one, and that it has been out for a while, but it showed up on Crunchyroll so I decided to give it a try.

I watched it with my 11 year old. It is fine. There is nothing that I would call objectionable. What I will say about this film is it tends towards a somewhat mature story line that may not hold a younger viewers interest.

The film (with a run time of about 60 minutes) is stunningly beautiful. The story is subdued, dealing with love, loss, and unrequited feelings. I watched the dub (which is rare for me) which was well done. I enjoyed it a lot and honestly found myself just saying: “Wow” a lot in response to the animation.

If you think your kids can sit through the story, have them watch it. Heck, if you want to explain to a friend or your parents how beautiful anime can be, have them watch this!

Until next time, keep watching and doing what you love. So will I.

I also agree that it is a beautiful film. This is a good one to talk about with friends over a beer and coffee. It works on a lot of different levels.

Of the three segments I liked the first one the most. I was emotionally drawn in, and did not know what would happen next. I watched Japanese language with subs, and it had more of an emotional impact on me than the English dub.

The second and third were also good. The movie is an example of how you even though you may not like what happens in in a movie it is still a good movie.

During the first segment, I identified and cared for the protagonist. Then I grew to dislike him a little more. Yes, at 5 cm per second, he became that much more pathetic.

I do think that you could create a lesson for kids. The movie does serve as a “warning” of how NOT TO BE.

Watch this guy. “Don’t waste your like moping and obsessing over some shit that will never happen.”

I would agree with all of what you said here. I too thought the first segment was the best and that the story is a good example of how not to be.

So many feels in this movie, it’s one of my top favorites for a good reason.

Probably what I love the most about this one, animation and story aside, is the music. By far “Cherry Blossom Extract” is one piece of music that will always get me all teary eyed. And of course “One More Time, One More Chance” man… that song is amazing.

Aside from The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (which is also extremely good and worth a watch), 5Cm Per Second is one of the best anime movies I’ve ever seen.

I will have to give it a watch again and pay closer to the music next time. I will keep an eye out for The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya as well.
